This area is home to a remarkable colony of over 600,000 Magellanic penguins, making it the largest continental colony globally.
Beyond the chance to witness these incredible creatures in their natural environment, the region also offers the opportunity to discover marine fossils that are visible in the cliffs and ravines descending towards the sea.
The Magellanic penguin colony at Estancia San Lorenzo has experienced consistent growth since its inception nearly 50 years ago, with an annual growth rate surpassing 20% since 1995. The penguins make their arrival each year in early September and depart the reserve by late April.
With a wide range of attractions, you can choose from various trails that differ in terms of the areas explored and their difficulty levels.

The trails and activities can be tailored to fit your schedule. You have the option to choose from the following:
*Penguin Experience, the classic tour
This trail takes you through a nesting area and a frequent transit zone for penguins. Midway, you'll encounter a coastal front offering breathtaking views of the expansive San Matías Gulf and the beach, which penguins use for entering, exiting, and resting. The tour concludes at the ruins of an old sea lion oil factory. The tour lasts 1.30 hours, with departures available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
We also suggest the Sunset Experience, essentially the same as the Penguin Experience but scheduled in the afternoon at 6 p.m., a perfect time for capturing the most stunning photos, amidst the peak penguin presence.
*Land of Penguins, mini-trekking and wildlife watching
This excursion is a mini-trekking adventure through an area with the densest concentration of wildlife, a section exclusively accessed by Researchers and Park Rangers. Small groups, accompanied by a Park Ranger from the San Lorenzo Ranch, are granted access.
We explore the “La Colmena” area, named for the high density of nests found here, and the Pingüinera Canyon, a crucial passage that penguins traverse to reach various nesting sites.
Among the most picturesque areas is the cliff region, which penguins have also chosen for nesting.
On the return journey, we travel along the upper part of the coast to reach our starting point. The tour lasts 2.40 hours, with a departure time at 10 a.m.
