Tour Description

Embark on a one-of-a-kind adventure: witness southern right whales from both above and beneath the water's surface without getting wet, aboard Southern Spirit's exclusive semi-submersible “Yellow Submarine”.

Meeting Point

  • Departure and Return: Southern Spirit Boarding Center – Puerto Pirámides, Península Valdés. Join us as we set sail on the Golfo Nuevo, traveling up to 10 nautical miles from our starting point, always closely following the whales' movements. Unlike any other vessel, the Yellow Submarine provides two unique ways to enjoy this experience:

  • Submarine Cabin: With 40 windows below the water level, you can observe whales in their natural habitat, offering a view akin to scuba diving—but without getting wet!
  • Outdoor Deck: Enjoy a traditional panoramic view from the surface, perfect for photography.

Passengers have the freedom to move freely between both areas during the tour.

Frequently Asked Questions

The southern right whale watching season in Puerto Madryn and Península Valdés is concentrated between winter and spring (approximately June to December), with peak activity in September and October. For the underwater whale watching tour, calm seas and good sunlight improve visibility through the windows of the semi-submersible. Morning and midday departures usually offer stable conditions. We recommend booking in advance during peak season, as tourist demand is very high. Remember that the Patagonian weather is variable; plan flexibly and bring warm clothing to fully enjoy this ecotourism experience.

The excursion takes place on a semi-submersible vessel designed for nature tourism, with two areas: an open-air upper deck for photography and a lower cabin with panoramic windows below the waterline. There, you can observe the southern right whale up close: its fins, baleen, belly, and powerful tail, as well as birds and marine wildlife. Naturalist guides provide interpretation throughout and offer recommendations for responsible whale watching. The trip typically lasts between 1.5 and 2 hours, departing from Puerto Pirámides on the Valdés Peninsula. It's a unique experience in Argentine Patagonia, ideal for travelers, families, and wildlife enthusiasts.

The underwater whale watching tour is a safe and regulated activity in Península Valdés, with a certified crew, responsible navigation protocols, and life jackets on board. It is suitable for families and travelers of all ages; however, pregnant women, people with reduced mobility, or back/vestibular problems should consult beforehand, as access to the underwater room may involve stairs and the sea may be choppy. To prevent seasickness, it is recommended to eat light meals, stay hydrated, and, if necessary, take medication prescribed by a healthcare professional. The operation depends on weather and safety conditions; the company may reschedule departures due to wind or waves.

The tour typically includes navigation in a semi-submersible, a naturalist guide (often bilingual), insurance, and safety equipment. It generally does not include transfers from Puerto Madryn or the entrance fee to the Península Valdés Protected Natural Area, which is paid separately upon arrival. To fully enjoy the experience, bring your ID, thermal and waterproof clothing, non-slip footwear, a hat or buff, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a camera. There may be spray on the upper deck; a windbreaker is helpful. Pack water and a snack. If you take seasickness medication, take it beforehand. Always check exactly what services are included in your reservation and if there are any additional costs.

Whale watching tours are typically booked online with immediate confirmation and limited availability during peak season. Prices may vary depending on the date, time, and category; please check for current rates and promotions. Arrive early at the departure point in Puerto Pirámides (approximately 100 km from Puerto Madryn; factor in tolls/park entrance fees). If weather or sea conditions prevent safe operation, the company will reschedule the tour or process a refund according to its cancellation policy. Review change policies, deadlines, and penalties before purchasing, and consider adding a spare day to your itinerary in case of rescheduling.
